February Talk - "The President’s Address" - Dr. McLeod

Date: Thursday February 18th
Time: 7 for 7:30pm
Location: Lecture Theatre, Postgraduate Centre, Poole Hospital

Our chairman Keith Matthews has invited Dr McLeod our President to give an address.  This will take place in the lecture theatre on February 18th.

Dr McLeod said he is looking forward to seeing PHSG members again.

He intends to talk about new developments in Cardiology and also asked if PHSG have any questions they may wish to raise. A number of questions have been sent in by PHSG members, and these have been forwarded to Dr McLeod.

REMINDER - Escoffier Restaurant Luncheon

Date: February 24th
Time: 12:00 for 12:30 start
Location: Lansdowne (map to be supplied)

There are only 60 places (6 tables of 10) available in the new dining room.

At the time of going to press there 3 seats available (cost £12 each). Please apply by phone (01202) 722814 or email  GDL@talktalk.net.

For those who missed the previous newsletter the following info could prove useful -

The Escoffier is now housed in a different building on the Lansdowne site and a map is in preparation to show the new location and access. There is no car parking allocation on-site now. Therefore people will have to make their own arrangements in the area. (note that kerbside parking in the area is usually choc-a bloc at this time of day!).

3 hotels close by offer parking for a fee if they have spaces available. These are:

• The Roundhouse – Lansdowne roundabout - £3.50 - see reception for ticket.
• Heathlands – rear park in Gervis Rd - £3 – see reception for ticket.
• The Royal – Gervis Rd - £3 – A special coin must be obtained at reception to open the exit Barrier

British Red Cross Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation Course

The British Red Cross CPR Courses are being held at Canford School on Friday 19th February at 11am and 1.30pm.

The first Course is now full but there are one or two places left for anyone wishing to take advantage of the kind offer of free CPR training from the Red Cross. Please contact Robin a.s.a.p. on 884250. There will most probably be further courses during 2010.

PHSG Computer Club goes onto Web-site

The PHSG Computer Club stopped meeting at the Postgraduate Centre, Poole Hospital in December. Members can now post their computer problems and queries onto a message board on our web-site home page, where David, Derek and Max will do their best to answer your questions.

Patient Views on Angiogram / Angioplasty

Dr. Alexandra Wyke of PatientView is running a survey on heart patients that have had one or both of the procedures angiogram and angioplasty.

The survey is completely anonymous and should take only a few minutes to complete.

Dr. Alexandra writes :

"PatientView is approaching your organisation, as experts on patients' views of cardiac care, to ask if you would like to post onto your website details about the following survey of patients on two cardiac care procedures, or circulate the study’s link to your patient members. The results of the survey (expected end-2010) will be sent to all patient organisations that have taken part in the study."

BHF Campaign for the General Election

The BHF is running an important campaign targeted at existing MPs and parliamentary candidates. The campaign sends a letter from each participant telling the Parliamentary candidates how important it is that they tackle heart and circulatory disease – the UK's biggest killer – at the General Election and beyond.

It would be great if you could take part in the British Heart Foundation's campaign by telling your candidates too. Please click on the link below to take part – and make a difference for heart health.

PHSG Cycle Group - next meeting

Date: Sunday 21st February
Time: 10:00am
Location:Broadstone Leisure Centre

Next PHSG Cycle ride is Sunday 21st February. Meeting at Broadstone Leisure Centre ("The Junction") at 10:00.

Destination Poole Quay & Back.

Rides are normally about 15 miles long, they are open to all members of the PHSG as long as your doctor approves. For help, advice, weather check and bike maintenance call Keith Matthews on 01202 855001

We don’t do RAIN!! If the weather looks "iffy", call before 9:00am to see if the ride is going ahead.

BHF Dorset Bike Ride 2010

Date: Sunday 25th April
Time: 10:00am
Location: Queen Elizabeth School, Wimborne

The BHF Dorset Bike Ride is back again for 2010! Why not join over 1,600 fellow cyclists and raise money for the BHF!

Take your pick from 25, 50 or even 66 miles. Everyone will start and finish at the Queen Elizabeth School, Wimborne and the picturesque route will take you through some magnificent Dorset countryside taking in huge patches of beautiful blue bells and quaint country cottages on route.  A ride not to be missed!
