Warning - Induction Ceramic Hobs

Message received from PHSG member Phil Church :

"I purchased an Induction Hob recently which involves using special utensils, pots and pans, which have to be Ferro-Magnetic.  To my horror I discovered a note in the instruction book that people with Pacemakers should not use these Hobs.  The book also stated people with Hearing Aids may experience some discomfort when using the Hob.  I checked with the staff at Comet who sell these products and they were not aware of these facts.  I feel our members should be made aware of these problems. Also, is there anything PHSG can do to encourage retailers to label their displays with a suitable warning to their customers?  I feel I had a lucky escape."

Research by Secretary :

A number of web-sites from the manufacturers, suppliers and others give a variation of different warnings:

  1. Vitralux Ceramic and Induction Hobs - "WARNING You cannot use an induction hob if you have a pacemaker fitted because it is thought to interfere with the rhythm of the pacemaker."
  2. Kenwood - Question : "I have a pace maker / other medical implant. Can I still use an induction hob?" Answer : "The induction hob generates short-range magnetic fields. If any user or person in close proximity has a pacemaker or other active implants, please consult a doctor before use concerning any possible incompatibility to prevent any risk to health"
  3. Advanced Kitchen Design - "you need to be careful if you have a heart pacemaker (check with the manufacturer). If you get too close you may find your heart rate speeding up and slowing down, in tune with your cooking"
  4. Howdens - "As the induction hob creates a magnetic field around its vicinity, it is dangerous for people who have a pacemaker or insulin pump in their bodies."
